Custom Made Shock Absorber for STL Buoy System

To support safer and more controlled docking of offshore loading buoys, Cranemaster developed a custom shock absorber solution for Submerged Turret Loading (STL) systems. Installed permanently on top of the buoy, the unit acts as an overload protection device—ensuring safe alignment with a vessel’s docking bay by absorbing peak forces and minimizing risk. These units are currently in long-term use, and continue to meet certification and performance standards.

CUSTOMER CHALLENGE

When transferring a loading buoy into a ship’s docking bay, vessel motion can generate sudden and extreme peak loads on the lifting gear. These uncontrolled forces pose a serious risk to both equipment and crew, especially during alignment and entry in rough sea conditions. The need for precise, shock-free docking was critical to avoid damage and delays.

CRANEMASTER SOLUTION

Cranemaster developed a custom-engineered shock absorber designed specifically for STL buoy systems. Permanently installed at the top of the buoy, the unit functions as an overload protection mechanism during the docking process.

As the buoy is lifted into position, the shock absorber activates only when forces exceed a defined threshold. The internal stroke mechanism absorbs the excess energy, providing gradual deceleration and eliminating the risk of hard impact. This ensures a controlled, safe connection between buoy and vessel.

RESULTS & RELIABILITY

Cranemaster’s STL shock absorbers have been in operation for several years, consistently meeting the inspection and maintenance requirements of certification bodies. Their proven performance has helped operators carry out safe, repeatable docking operations across varying offshore conditions.

These solutions are currently deployed on APL STL loading buoys in the Vincent and Reliance fields, delivering long-term reliability and critical overload protection in high-risk marine environments.
