What is a Shock Absorber?

A shock absorber is a device used to mitigate the impact and vibrations associated with lifting and lowering heavy loads. Offshore crane systems often operate in challenging environments, such as those encountered in the offshore oil and gas industry. These environments can include rough seas, high winds, and other dynamic conditions that may generate significant forces during lifting operations.

Benefits of Using a Shock Absorber

The primary purpose of a shock absorber in offshore crane operations is to cushion and dampen the effects of sudden stops, starts, or dynamic loading, thereby reducing stress on the crane structure, load, and supporting infrastructure. When using a shock absorber, the risk of a so called “pile run” is significantly reduced.

The first applications of Cranemaster units back in the early 1980s were related to shock absorption. Since then small units with SWL of a few ton up to large units with SWL of more than 1000 ton have been developed.
